So you’ve made the decision to update your home with high-quality hardwood flooring from Renaissance. You’ve selected colors, styles or patterns, and you’ve set the date for installation to begin. It’s an exciting moment, but it’s also admittedly a disruption, as professional installers will be invading your space for up to several days. What can you do to prepare? How can you help streamline the process so your installation proceeds smoothly and you can get back to your normal routine? Here are some tips that may help.

Clear the Work Area

Before installation can begin, the entire floor space must be cleared. In preparation for the installation crew, move all furniture, rugs and objects into another room or into storage. (If you need assistance with this step, we can arrange for movers to help you; we can also arrange for a temporary storage pod if you need one.)

Remove Sensitive or Fragile Objects from the Room

In addition to moving furniture out of the affected room(s), we also highly recommend removing hanging objects and/or fragile items from the walls—not just to prevent against breakage (our craftsmen do attempt to be extremely careful), but also because wood floor installation naturally creates a lot of dust. Consider removing pictures, mirrors and other hanging items, as well as decorative items resting on shelves or mantles. For anything that cannot be removed easily, we can provide a plastic covering if necessary.

Allow Ample Time for Installation

Once your home is ready for our crew, remember that your normal routine may be disrupted while the hardwood flooring is installed. Make adequate arrangements to stay out of the affected rooms for several days while we install, finish and stain your wood floors. If we’re only doing a single room, the disruption may be only slight; for multiple rooms or whole-home projects, some families are more comfortable staying elsewhere while installation is underway.

How long should you plan for, exactly? That depends mainly on the size of the project. On average, our craftsmen are able to install approximately 500 square feet of flooring per day, so you can calculate based on the amount of floor space we’re installing for you—plus one or two days for prep and clean-up.

Exercise Care when Resetting the Space

Once we give the all-clear, your new wood flooring should be safe for normal use; however, remember to exercise caution when replacing furnishings and decorations in the room. (You don’t want to have to call us back to fix a gash or scratch in the floor caused by shifting furniture or a sliding chair leg!) As before, if you need assistance, we can arrange for movers to help you.

By preparing beforehand, you can help us make your hardwood flooring installation a relatively painless process so you can get back to your life and enjoy your new floors.
