Whether you are thinking to install new wood flooring or refinish your existing ones, you face a dilemma: how can you be sure your new floors match the design style and aesthetic of your space? It can be a stressful decision, for sure–after all, you plan on living with this decision for many years to come. Correctly matching your wood flooring with your interior design can create a harmonious and inviting atmosphere in your home. If you choose something that conflicts with the space, however, it can create an unsettled mood, and you may feel you have to do more renovations to fix the issue.

Fortunately, there are some basic interior design principles that can help you make an informed decision about what flooring color, style and type will best suit your current interior design style (assuming, of course, that you’re happy with your current style). Here are a few tips to help point you in the right direction.

Modern Style

Modern interior design is characterized by clean lines, minimalistic aesthetics, and a neutral color palette. When selecting wood flooring for a modern home, consider the following:

Color Schemes: Opt for lighter shades and basic wood types like maple, or white oak. These lighter hues complement the sleek and airy feel of modern interiors.

Patterns: Simple, straight plank patterns work best. Avoid intricate designs that may disrupt the clean lines typical of modern design.

Finishes: Matte or satin finishes are ideal, as they provide a subtle, understated look.

Textures: Smooth textures are preferred, enhancing the modern, streamlined appearance.

Furniture Choices: Pair your light wood floors with contemporary furniture pieces in neutral tones, incorporating metal and glass elements for an added touch of sophistication.

Rustic Style

Rustic interior design embraces natural elements, creating a warm and cozy ambiance. Wood flooring is a natural fit for this style, and here’s how you can achieve the perfect match:

Color Schemes: Rich, warm tones are ideal for rustic spaces. Consider wood choices walnut, cherry, or oak. These bring out the natural beauty of the wood and add to the rustic charm.

Patterns: Wide planks often fit well within a rustic theme, adding an authentic, lived-in feel.

Finishes: Go for hand-scraped or distressed finishes that highlight the wood’s natural imperfections. To “lean in” to the rustic look, consider reclaimed wood (just be prepared to pay more and to wait longer).

Textures: Embrace rough and textured surfaces that contribute to the rustic aesthetic.

Furniture Choices: Complement your wood floors with furniture made from natural materials, such as leather, wood, and stone. Earthy tones and handcrafted pieces will further enhance the rustic vibe.

Traditional Style

Traditional interior design is timeless and elegant, often featuring classic details and rich colors. To match wood flooring with a traditional style, consider these pointers:

Color Schemes: Darker wood floors like mahogany, oak, or cherry are perfect for traditional settings, adding a sense of sophistication and grandeur.

Patterns: Herringbone or parquet patterns can add an element of classic design and craftsmanship.

Finishes: Satin or semi-gloss finishes reflect light beautifully, adding to the elegance of traditional interiors.

Textures: Smooth and polished textures are preferable, maintaining the refined look.

Furniture Choices: Opt for classic furniture pieces with intricate details and rich fabrics. Antique or vintage pieces can also add a touch of historical charm.

Industrial Style

Industrial interior design is edgy and raw, often featuring exposed brick, metal, and unfinished wood. Here’s how you can align your wood flooring with an industrial design:

Color Schemes: Neutral and darker shades work well for these spaces. Aim for gray stains or weathered wood. These tones can complement the industrial materials and finishes.

Patterns: Simple, wide planks are ideal. Chevron patterns can also add an interesting dynamic.

Finishes: Matte or distressed finishes contribute to the raw, unfinished look typical of industrial design.

Textures: Rough and distressed textures add to the rugged, industrial feel.

Furniture Choices: Combine your wood floors with furniture made from metal, leather, and reclaimed wood. Look for pieces with a utilitarian feel, such as vintage metal chairs and wooden tables.

Whether your style is modern, rustic, traditional, or industrial, there are wood flooring options that can beautifully complement your home’s aesthetic.

Some style trends appear once, and you never see them again. Others, however, seem to make their way back into popular culture again and again. That’s exactly what we see happening with herringbone wood flooring. Although this flooring pattern has been around for centuries, it’s recently become one of our most requested floors yet again. It’s like this classic style has been rediscovered, and now, it’s making waves in modern homes, beautifully marrying old-world charm with contemporary design.

What’s the Story Behind Herringbone?

The herringbone pattern isn’t a newcomer. It’s actually been around since the days of the Roman Empire, deriving its name from its resemblance to fish bones. Originally used in brick roadways for its stability under compression, this pattern made its grand entrance into homes during the 16th century, dressing up the floors of fancy French chateaus and Italian villas. At that time, it was the epitome of luxury and sophistication. Fast forward a few centuries, and herringbone is still captivating homeowners all over the globe.

Why We’re All Falling for Herringbone

There’s something about the zigzag pattern of herringbone that just draws you in. It’s not your ordinary flooring; it’s got character and drama. It plays with light and space, making rooms look bigger and more interesting. Whether your home design is ultra-modern or more Downton Abbey, herringbone wood flooring fits right in.

It’s Not Just Pretty—It’s Practical, Too

Herringbone isn’t just about good looks; it’s also incredibly durable. The interlocking pattern of the wood planks is not just for show–it adds an additional layer of stability that can withstand lots of foot traffic and plenty of weight. (Remember–the Romans used the herringbone pattern as a way to reinforce their roads!) Ultimately, when it’s properly installed, herringbone wood flooring can last for generations–not just in style, but in substance.

Boosting Your Home’s Value

If you’re thinking of selling your home someday, herringbone floors might just be your secret weapon. Wood flooring in itself is known to boost home values, but the herringbone pattern amplifies this trend because it attracts more attention. It’s an investment that pays off by making your space more desirable to future buyers.

Trendy, Yet Timeless

Yes, herringbone wood flooring is having a bit of a moment–but considering this style has been around for ages, there’s also a timeless quality to it. This style is the perfect blend of beauty, versatility, and durability, with a splash of history thrown in for good measure. It’s a choice that says, “I love my home, and I want it to have something special.”

One important thing to keep in mind: herringbone flooring should not be installed by novices. It’s a complicated process that requires precise measuring and a high level of craftsmanship. That’s why you should only use a trusted wood flooring company to install it. At Renaissance, our team of master craftsmen are highly skilled in installing herringbone wood flooring, along with many other intricate patterns and styles.

Despite the timelessness of wood flooring itself, preferences do change over time as to how these floors look and what people are asking for. Now a few months into 2024, we’re noticing some specific design trends taking the forefront. Some of these are timeless looks that are making a comeback, while other trends seem to be new and innovative. Let’s dive in and explore some of the top wood flooring design trends we are tracking this year.

Natural & Light Wood

In keeping with the ongoing popularity of the “modern farmhouse” style, we’re seeing a consistent demand for natural finishes, lighter wood tones, and a more “unfinished” look that embraces the natural imperfections of the wood such as knots, grains, and color variations. This move toward nature and authenticity makes each floor unique and tells a story of its own.

Mixed Tone Wood Floors

Mixed tone wood floors are gaining popularity as they offer a unique and visually interesting aesthetic. This trend involves combining different shades and tones of wood within the same floor, creating a beautiful blend of colors that adds depth and character to your space. Watch for this trend to grow in popularity this year.

Wide Plank Floors

While some previously dismissed wide plank hardwood as a fad, its popularity is continuing to rise. The wider planks give a sense of luxury and spaciousness, making them perfect for open-plan living spaces. Additionally, these wide planks can feature natural imperfections and saw marks, further enhancing their rustic charm.

Large Format Flooring

Hand-in-hand with wide plank floors is a trend known as large format flooring. These floors not only integrate wider planks, but larger and longer planks, to create a dramatic and expansive look. This style is particularly suited to larger rooms where the scale of the flooring can truly shine.

Patterned Wood Flooring

While patterned styles have been around for centuries, herringbone floors are making a huge comeback in 2024, along with other classic patterns like parquet flooring. There’s also a trend toward more innovative, modern, and abstract patterns as homeowners seek to add a one-of-a-kind look to their homes. This trend truly gives homeowners an opportunity to express their creativity and individuality.

Whether you’re renovating your home or planning a new build, these wood flooring trends offer a wealth of inspiration. That said, remember that the best floor is one that fits your personal style and meets your practical needs. At Renaissance, our skilled craftsmen are highly experienced in all wood flooring styles. Whatever style you choose, you can trust that you’re getting the highest level of quality, both in product and in installation.

It’s a fairly common practice for homeowners to place area rugs on their hardwood floors, as much for decor as for protection. But there are ways to use area rugs optimally, and there are ways that the rugs themselves could have unintended consequences for your floors. Fortunately, if you take a few precautions and place your rugs strategically, those rugs can add warmth and beauty to your space while offering maximum protection. The following guide tells you what you need to know.

Why Use Rugs on Hardwood Floors?

By adding rugs to your hardwood floors, you not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of your rooms but also provide a layer of protection to your floors. Rugs help to prevent scratches and scuffs caused by foot traffic or furniture movement. They also add warmth to your space, making it feel more cozy and inviting. Furthermore, rugs act as a sound buffer, reducing unwanted echoes throughout the space.

Tips for Optimal Rug Choice and Placement

Determining where to place your rug largely depends on the room’s layout and function. In living rooms, a common practice is to center the rug under the coffee table, with furniture either all on or partially on the rug. For dining rooms, ensure the rug extends past the dining table so chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out. In bedrooms, rugs are typically placed under the bed but should extend beyond the sides for a balanced look.

Size and Shape

The size and shape of your rug should optimally complement the room and furniture arrangement. A small rug in a large room can make the room feel disjointed, whereas a rug that’s too large may overwhelm the space. For a single area rug, as a general rule, there should be 10-20 inches of bare floor between the edges of the rug and the walls of the room. You can also place small complementary rugs in different parts of the room for a more original or even “boho” look. And in most rooms, you can protect high-traffic walkways with longer, thinner “runners” that tend to look good in most spaces.

When it comes to shape, rectangular rugs work well in most spaces, but don’t shy away from round or oval rugs, especially in smaller spaces or to highlight certain furniture pieces.

Colors and Patterns

When it comes to colors and patterns, the possibilities are practically limitless. The rug should either complement or contrast with your furniture, and its color should enhance the overall look of the room. For small areas such as entryways, opt for lighter shades that won’t overpower the space. When choosing a patterned rug, make sure it complements but doesn’t compete with the other patterns in the room.

Tips for Preventing Damage

Ironically, without taking certain precautions, your area rugs can potentially damage the very floors they’re intended to protect. Let’s discuss some common-sense tips to prevent this from happening.

Use a Rug Pad

Rug pads are essential because they provide a barrier between the rug and the floor, preventing unwanted scratches and scuffs from rug slippage. Additionally, rug pads can add extra cushioning, making them easier on the feet.

Rotate Rugs (and Furniture, When Necessary)

If you leave rugs in place for a long period of time, you will likely begin to see a notable difference in appearance between the covered and uncovered areas of your floors. This is because the covered areas haven’t had the same exposure to daylight, foot traffic, etc. To avoid uneven fading or wear on your hardwood floors, it’s a good idea to periodically rotate your rugs, especially if they’re in a sunny spot or high-traffic area. By changing their position, you distribute the wear evenly over the floor. If your rugs are under furnishings, you may want to consider moving the furniture around, as well, for much the same reason.

Clean Rugs Regularly

Dirt and dust can collect under rugs, acting like sandpaper and potentially scratching your floors. Regular cleaning, both of the rug and the floor underneath, will help prevent this from happening. (Pro tip: If you use a vacuum with a beater brush on an area rug, make absolutely certain to keep the vacuum only on the rug itself. Don’t let the brush bristles touch the wood floor on the edges to avoid scratching the floor. (Better yet, just turn the beater off when vacuuming the area rugs.)

With the right placement, size, and care, rugs can enhance the beauty of your hardwood floors while preserving their quality and integrity. If you’re considering hardwood flooring installation in Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Broken Arrow, Catoosa, Owasso, or other parts of Green Country, our team will be happy to provide a complimentary quote. Contact us here to learn more.

Let’s face it–from wood types to colors to patterns to finishes, wood flooring offers a nearly unlimited set of options from which to choose. But just as we see changing styles in tastes in fashion and interior design, we also notice changing trends as to what’s popular in hardwood floors. Sometimes these trends involve new designs and colors, while other times a traditional style will find renewed popularity. As we kick off the new year, we’re noticing three particular wood flooring trends that stand out from the rest. These are based both on what’s happening in the market and the requests we’re getting in our own offices. If you’re planning a wood flooring update in your home this year, you’ll want to pay attention to the following top trends for 2023.

Herringbone Wood Floors

While herringbone patterns have been around for ages, it’s safe to say herringbone is coming back in a big way. Its characteristic zigzag pattern adds a visual interest that makes the space feel more inviting and luxurious. Not only is herringbone wood flooring stylish, but it also has a timeless feel, making it an ideal choice for those looking to add an element of lasting beauty to their home. (Herringbone is currently one of our most requested flooring styles.)

Unstained Wood Floors

Another popular trend–and one that we’ve discussed recently–is to install and finish hardwood floors without any stain, opting to keep the “natural look.” This trend fits in well with the current move toward wellness and “bringing the outdoors indoors” because of its rustic, unspoiled look. The natural tones of unstained wood can fit in many decors, creating a modern yet cozy feel.

Bleached Wood Floors

Bleached wood floors are becoming increasingly popular for those looking to add a light, airy feel to their home. This trend involves the use of a special bleaching process that removes some of the natural color from the wood, resulting in a unique and distinctive look. Bleached wood flooring can be used anywhere from living rooms to bedrooms and kitchens, creating an inviting atmosphere with its soft tones and subtle texture. It’s also a great design option for lightening up dark spaces or amplifying natural light. Its versatility makes it easy to mix and match with other types of flooring or incorporate into existing décor styles like modern farmhouse or coastal chic.

Whether you’re inspired by one of these popular trends, whether you’re looking for a more traditional, “timeless” look, or whether you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind custom design, the installation technicians here at Renaissance are versed in all types of wood flooring installations. Most importantly, we are committed to the highest levels of craftsmanship to ensure your floors will beautify your home or business for many years to come.

As with clothing, decor, architectural design, and so many other aspects of our world, wood flooring has a fashion sense all its own. While hardwood floors in general are timeless in their appeal, there are always new styles and trends to discover. Even vintage styles often enjoy seasons of fresh popularity. Here’s a quick look at some of the current wood flooring trends we’re tracking for 2022.

Grey is out; bleached and “greige” are in.

After enjoying several years of immense popularity, we’re finally seeing a decline in demand for grey wood floors. Instead, the current trends are moving toward lighter looks. Bleached and whitewashed floors are hot right now, as well as “greige,” a color combination of light beige with a touch of grey. These lighter tones are popular because they add a sense of space and lightness–two things many people are craving right now in the wake of the pandemic.

Natural finishes are again in vogue.

There will always be some demand for the elegant look of a high-polished wood floor. But these days, the low- or no-sheen natural wood finish is really taking off again. Natural finishes fall right in line with the “modern farmhouse” style that is wildly popular right now: a design trend that blends natural and modern elements for a comfy-chic feel.

Wide planks continue their upward trend.

Wide-plank flooring has become increasingly popular in recent memory, and this trend shows no signs of slowing down. Hardwood planks between 5″ and 7″ wide are selling well, although it’s not unusual to get a call for 10″-wide planks from time to time. Wide planks are valued for their ability to create visual interest and add a sense of dimension to any room.

“Wire-brushed” is edging past “hand-scraped.”

Generally speaking, the textured look of distressed wood continues to be popular. But recently, we’re seeing designers and homeowners lean slightly away from the hand-scraped look and more toward wire-brushing. It’s a subtle difference, but wire-brushing offers softer textures while hand-scraping gives off a more rustic vibe. For now, at least, people tend to prefer the worn look of wire-brushed floors to the weathered look of hand-scraping.

Engineered wood flooring increasing in popularity.

There’s been a lot of debate over engineered wood flooring versus natural hardwoods over the years. However, there has been much improvement in the look, feel, and design of engineered wood in recent years. For this reason, we’ve started to see an increase in the number of homeowners and builders asking for engineered wood floors specifically. We can expect this trend to continue for at least the near future.

Whatever wood flooring trends appeal most to you, Renaissance Hardwood Floors has the expertise and skill to make sure it’s done right.

As far as wood floors go, oak is the most common choice for hardwood flooring. It’s durable, resilient, takes stain easily, and is fairly affordable. But should you choose red oak or white oak flooring for your home? There’s a lot of confusion and misconceptions among homeowners about the differences between red oak and white oak. They’re both very good choices, but each has its own aesthetic value, and each works well in different situations. Let’s explain some of the key differences so you can make an informed decision about which flooring type is best for you.

It’s More About Tint than Color

One of the most common misconceptions (understandably so) is the idea that red oak is red and white oak is white. By extension, therefore, red must be dark while white is light. In fact, neither is entirely true. White oak isn’t really white—it has more yellow and brown undertones, and it’s actually darker than red oak. Red oak does have red undertones to it, but it typically shows up more pink than red in unstained wood. And as you can see in the image above, both red and white oak can be stained light or dark so they look very similar! (Red oak is on the left.) So when you’re choosing between them, you need to think more in terms of tints and hues than actual colors or light/dark. If you’re going with a natural, unstained look—or using a lighter stain—you’ll definitely notice the warmer yellows in the white oak versus the reddish highlights of the red oak. If you use a dark stain, red and white oak can actually look similar to each other.

White Oak Is Harder than Red Oak

White oak is dense and has a Janka hardness scale rating of 1360. Red oak is more porous and has a hardness rating of 1290. Thus, white oak holds up slightly better against heavy traffic and is a little more spill-resistant than red oak. That’s something worth considering if your home sees a lot of activity and foot traffic.

Red Oak Has a More Prominent Grain Pattern than White Oak

If you were to place a plank of red oak next to a plank of white oak and compare them, you’d see that the red oak has a pronounced grain pattern, while the white oak pattern is more subdued. Thus, white oak floors have a smoother, more uniform look, while red oak will show more texture and depth.

Which Oak Flooring Is Right for You?

Both red oak and white oak are excellent all-around flooring choices for most homes. The choice really comes down to your needs and your preferences. If you need the durability of hardwood, or if your space would look best with a more uniform look, white oak is probably the choice for you. If you prefer wood floors with stronger grain and texture, or if the reddish tint matches your home’s aesthetic better, you might go with the red oak. Whatever your choice, you want to get the best grade of wood your budget will allow—and you want it to be installed by trained experts to ensure beauty and longevity.

If you follow any of the home design trend publications or attend home improvement expos, wide plank flooring is one of those features you’re likely to see a lot of these days. Wide plank hardwood floors are becoming increasingly popular both in new homes and in renovated spaces. They have a keen ability to add visual interest and a sense of space in both contemporary and traditional/rustic settings.

The question is—should you jump on the wide plank bandwagon? Will it enhance the beauty of your home for years to come, or will it appear dated in a few years? Is wide plank flooring right for every space? If not, when should it be used? Let’s take a closer look at this design trend so you can make an informed decision about whether wide plank hardwoods are right for your next project.

What Is Wide Plank Flooring?

The most common width of most hardwood floor planks is 2 1/4 inches, although they can obviously vary a bit in either direction. From a design perspective, we consider wide plank flooring to be any planking wider than 4 inches. The trendiest plank sizes currently range between 6-10 inches in width, and a few even go as wide as 20 inches. The wider planks tend to have more knots in them, which can look exceptionally attractive in rustic spaces. However, when you use select grade planks with fewer knots, they can enhance the look of modern and contemporary rooms, as well.

The Pros and Cons of Wide Planks

Like anything else, wide plank flooring has both advantages and disadvantages, and you’ll want to weigh these before making a decision.

The pros:

Adds visual interest to both modern and traditional spaces.

Fewer seams help the wood floor tie in better with the rest of the room.

Adds a sense of space and dimension.

Adds to the appraisal value of the home.

The cons:

The cost—wide planking is considerably more expensive than standard planking.

Availability—despite being a popular choice, wide plank flooring is scarcer and must often be special-ordered.

More humidity sensitive. Wide plank flooring can be more susceptible to cupping and crowning due to changes in humidity levels. It’s important to maintain optimal humidity levels at between 35-45 percent inside the home.

Factors to Consider When Deciding on Wide Plank Flooring

How do you know if wide plank hardwood floors are right for your space? When making a decision, you’ll want to keep the following in mind:

The size of the room. Wide planks create an airy sense of space in larger rooms, but they can make smaller spaces look cramped.

The overall vibe of the room. Rustic spaces do very well with wide planks, especially when they are made from reclaimed wood. However, the wrong grade or shade of wood can conflict with modern or contemporary looks. For these, make sure you use select grade wood with fewer knots—preferably in a lighter shade or whitewashed look.

Your budget. Wide plank floors are expensive to install and require extra effort to maintain. Make sure you’re willing to spend both the money and the time.

Will Wide Plank Floors Go Out of Style?

Will your wide plank hardwood floors look dated in a few years? No one can predict the future, of course, but in our opinion, it’s not likely that this trend will prove to be a fad like other design trends. In fact, wide planks were the norm in colonial days, which is why many wide plank projects are made from reclaimed wood. So even if the trends change with the times, your wide plank floors will likely continue to look attractive for many years to come.

Whatever type of hardwood floors you decide to use, Renaissance Hardwood Floors is your flooring company of choice in northeast Oklahoma. If you’re looking to install wood flooring in Glenpool, Tulsa, Coweta, Claremore, Broken Arrow or other parts of Green Country, call us 918-298-4477 for a free estimate.

Homes with a smaller square footage can feel cozy and homey, but they also can present a challenge for homeowners and decorators. Too much furniture or the wrong color schemes and patterns can easily turn a “cozy” space into a claustrophobic one. Ample lighting, light colored paint and other decorating techniques can make these spaces feel more open and airy—but did you know your choice of hardwood flooring can also add a sense of space to your room? When remodeling a smaller home, or a small room within the home, here are some tips for how to use hardwood flooring to your best advantage.

Choose Wider Planks

When deciding on plank widths, you might assume wider planks might feel too large for the room. Actually, the opposite is true—wider planks create a sense of space. Conversely, if your wood planks are narrow, it takes more of them to cover the floor—and in a small space, this can produce a cramped feeling. Wider planks make the room feel larger.

Strategic Color Choice

While dark paint and décor can make a room feel closed-in, this isn’t necessarily the case for dark woods. In fact, when used in contrast with light, cool paint on the walls and trim, a dark hardwood floor can actually increase the sense of space. You can, of course, select a lighter wood or a lighter stain if you choose, and it may in fact open up the room—however, if your walls are also light or white, you run the risk of creating a bland space rather than an open one. The key is contrast as much as color.

Plank Direction

Just as narrow planks can create a cramped feel in a small room, so can laying the planks in the wrong direction. To create more openness, lay wood planks parallel to the longest walls in the room. Another technique is to lay the planks diagonally to draw the eye to the corners of the room. This can also be especially useful if the room is square.

To help prevent mishaps and help you maintain peace on earth (or at least peace of mind)—here are a few helpful holiday tips for keeping your wood floors safe.

Shoes at the Door

Tracked-in dirt and mud aren’t just a pain to clean—when they come in on the soles of your guests’ shoes, they can leave scratch marks on the floors. Set aside a rug near the entrance to your home and graciously ask your guests to leave their shoes there. (To compensate, you might need to turn up the thermostat a little on cold days.) If it’s not feasible to have guests remove their shoes, at least put a high-quality mat at the door to capture unwanted dirt and sand.

Rugs for High-Traffic Areas

Another way to preserve your floors is to lay rugs along the main traffic paths of your home, especially during the holidays. These not only add extra protection, but they also send a subtle message to visitors to stay on the path so the uncovered parts of your floor receive less traffic.

Rugs Under the Eating Areas, Too

Spilled food and drink can also do damage to your floors, especially if they lay undetected. Reduce the risk by placing rugs under your dining room table and any other places where guests are likely to consume food and drink. Make sure the rug is large enough to cover the space around the table where people sit, not just the table area itself. (The rug will also protect your floors from marks made by sliding chair legs—and if you don’t happen to have a rug large enough for the chairs, make sure your chair legs have felt padding on the feet to protect against scratches.)

Tree Blanket Under the Live Tree

Yes, tree sap comes from trees, but that doesn’t mean you want the nightmare of trying to get it off your wood floors. If you’re one of those people who loves the piney smell of a live Christmas tree, make sure you have a blanket large enough to cover the space under the widest parts of your tree. It will not only catch any stray drops of tree sap, but also make the pine needles easier to clean up when the holidays are over.

Your holidays don’t have to be followed by regret. Be proactive in protecting your wood floors, and you’ll be free to enjoy the season with family and friends without worry.
